Line drawing using different weights of rope, string, thread. Students use thin, medium, and thick lines to match rope, string, and thread, while measuring for accuracy in proportion and perspective.

Additive and reductive value drawing on lightly toned paper practicing sensitivity to light and shadows, and accurate measurement of objects in perspective.
White still-life with projected colorful lights. Students practice mixing chromatic grays and to depict light on white objects.
Students follow a series of composition prompts about a chosen object leading into a longer painting project.
Using a sunset as color reference, students build a sunset from found materials using dye and paint.
Process-based assignment used to introduce students to abstraction, process, texture, and the picture plane.
